Old Hickory Lake
02/05/2012
Went out to Old Hickory Lake yesterday with my wife to catch some bass. It was a tough one! A day after a cold front in the winter. Started out slow, but the bite got better as the day went on. Ended up with 11 bass, 4 keepers! Largest one was 4 pounds caught on a crankbait. Second largest was 3 and half and caught on a Tennessee rig. Total weight of the 4 keepers was little over 12 pounds. Not a bad day for post frontal conditional. The rest came on a jig. The key to today was fishing slow and around cover. All bass were between 8 and 15 ft. Good Luck to all, Mike Davis Outdoors Guide, Robert Hunter

Bass were scarce this morning and early afternoon. Only caught a few bass and a couple of crappie with jerkbaits. Some bass were also being caught with jigs. None were keepers. Water temperature is around 48 degrees. Water level was down around a foot and a half.  Late afternoon bite finally come through.  Caught several bass between 2 and 4 pounds and a pound and a half crappie in a depth of 5-20 feet.  Seemed that once the water drop stabilized, the fish moved in to eat.  Wind was North Northeast at 5 MPH and cloudy skies with some breaks of sun late afternoon.

Water temperature is 48 degrees in the creeks and very clear. Can see 4 feet deep easily. Several bass being caught in transition areas on jerk baits. Crappie bite really good. Had three boats around us that had over 30 crappie with 10-15 keepers. We even caught a few bass fishing.

I decided to head to Old Hickory Lake yesterday. Arriving around 9AM, I began fishing transition banks with jerk baits. Now note, the wind was blowing at 25-30 MPH from the W to WNW so fishing was very tough from a wind aspect. Fishing transition banks on the wind blow areas, we caught a few bass just as a cold front was passing through. Water temp was 48 degrees. If out on the lake with this wind, ensure that you keep safety in mind. Wear warm clothes, bring plenty of gloves, and keep life jackets on.
